The Art of Cosmetology

!±8± The Art of Cosmetology

Beauty Schools offers training programs and courses about cosmetology. Cosmetology is the science and application of beauty treatments. Although you may not know that the increasing demand and pressure to look good is not something that only started in recent times, but in the earliest days of history.

There has been evidences found that led to the belief that the ancient Egyptians have practiced a distinctive way of self-beautification, which focused on the skin and appearance. During those days, a mixture of lead, ash and mercury was used as eye liner. As for the Chinese, ancient dwellers concocted a mixture of natural ingredients to create colorful nail polish. While Romans soon discovered aesthetic properties of lotions, oils and even animal fats. From then on, technological advancements were applied to cosmetology that lead to its development in different areas of expertise.

The art of cosmetology could further be divided into different types:
Hair Stylist -- Hair styling is an area of cosmetology that focuses on creating different hairstyles. From cutting/trimming and chemical servicing such as hair relaxers, adding texture, perms, colors and restorative treatments are all the tasks of a Hairstylist. Manicuring -- Manicure is a term that refers to the cosmetic treat for the fingernails or hands, while Pedicure is for the toenails or feet. The origin of the word manicure is from two Latin words 'manus'(hand) and 'cura'(care). The process of manicuring/pedicuring usually starts by soaking or applying on the hands or feet a softening, after which lotion is smeared over the softened area. The nail are then shaped then applied with nail polish. Artificial nail tips, acrylics, and nail gels may also be utilized in manicures. Small pictures and designs may be painted on the nails, as well as putting on tiny decals or imitation jewels. Proper sanitation is a major concern in Manicuring especially for the hand tools utilized in the process. There may be times that the skin and not only the nails are trimmed, thus there is a possible risk in proliferating infection. Nail Technician -- Both a manicurist and a nail technician performs manicuring and pedicuring but the latter is more specialized in the area of caring for the nails. Nail technicians have a knowledge on and could identify nail irregularities and diseases. However, they do not give or administer treatments for these diseases and only refer a client to a physician. Esthetician -- As for the study of skin care, an Esthetician is an expert in executing facials, microdermabrasion, body wraps (relaxing treatments which involve hot linens, plastic sheets, and blankets), salt glows (an exfoliation treatment), waxing as a form of hair removal, cosmetic make-up services and other services concerning the skin. An Esthetician may work solely in a spa or salon or as an assistant to a doctor in beauty clinics. If working with a doctor, an esthetician may perform more advanced services under the doctor's supervision like deep chemical peels. They should be able to skillfully recommend skin and body care products to clients and could be licensed exclusively for that skill. Beauty Therapist -- A Beauty Therapist specializes in treatments such as hair removal, massage, body wraps, skin care, eye lash and eye brow tinting, make-up and machine treatments like non-surgical facelifts and faradic muscle tone. Electrologist -- An Electrologist is an expert in all forms of electrolysis methods whereby using an electrolysis machine. Hair is permanently eliminated in Electrtolysis hair removal method.

Good Food Good Health - Healthy Liver Reduces Cellulite

!±8± Good Food Good Health - Healthy Liver Reduces Cellulite

Hi Everyone

Ladies did you know the greatest thing to help keep cellulite to a minimum is through a good healthy diet, as this keeps your liver working at its potential, reducing storage of HDL - bad cholesterol.

As I have mentioned many times before 'we are what we eat' so our motto 'good food for good health' should be everybody's.

I believe as we get older we do take this 'on board', but we need to encourage the younger generation that they need to instill this as a way of life now, and not something they can just put right later on, as cellulite can start to form at puberty - although it is generally later.

French doctors coined the term 'cellulite' - the bain of all women, believing it is a certain form of fat that accumulates under the skin, leaving the affected area looking lumpy and dimpled, like orange peel.

As with any health problem, there is generally no such thing as a single cause, but different life situations combined with co-factors and causative agents that interact and promote an effect or symptom, and cellulite is no different.

Today most doctors do not believe cellulite to be a special form of fat, but believe it is simply ordinary fat that is pulled down by gravity.

I hold my hand up to the fact that over the years I have checked in the mirror for tell tale signs, and yes I do have some, I first noticed it when I was half way through my first pregnancy and nearly had a fit, only being 28.

Before this I had always thought cellulite was an 'older' thing that happened to us when we became a certain age, unlike nowadays when the paparazzi show pictures of stick insect models sporting it.

Cellulite can affect any woman of any size at any time. I really wish that when I was younger I knew what I know now about eating 'good food for good health', as this has a great bearing on what we are, and how this really does affect our health and its effect on our body.

Many studies have been carried out on cellulite and its causes, and weak functioning of the liver was found to be common in women prone to it.

So it cannot be stressed enough ladies that we really do need to eat a varied diet of good food, so that the liver can work effectively. When we eat a poor diet that is high in saturated fats, our liver becomes sluggish and clogged.

Fatty degeneration of the liver is caused by excessive fat build up and impairs the ability to function and handle fat properly, this allows fat to be stored around the body accumulating often around the waistline or being deposited as cellulite under the skin.

When the liver is impaired by fatty degeneration cholesterol levels are hampered allowing 'bad' LDL cholesterol to build up instead of manufacturing 'good' cholesterol - HDL.

Also it revealed that a poor lymphatic system, bad circulation and constipation were thought to help with the formation of cellulite. Hormonal in-balances could also be a determining factor.

Therefore poor dietary choices and nutritional deficiencies- where diets are rich in processed foods, fats, alcohol and toxins such as additives and colourings affect our biochemical processes and digestion, that hinders and prevents natural detoxification.

Because of the fast food lifestyle undertaken nowadays - obesity is alarmingly on the rise, and is an underlying cause of several illnesses, as the dietary factors with these types of foods are causing congestion of vessels and ducts of the circulation and eliminations systems including the bile ducts of the liver and the digestive tract.

Unfortunately for us females hormones and fat are very much related, and after reaching puberty we carry twice as much fat due to the body becoming ready for the event of pregnancy. This stored fat is very resistant to the effort of weight loss.

Fat or fat cells are formed from - fatty acids in food, lipoproteins in the liver, chylomicrons in the intestine and from insulin dependant triglycerides that come from amino acids and glucose.

The volume of fat cells in certain areas of the body is increased with higher levels of estrogen and progesterone, whereas testerone does the opposite.

So ladies we are all bound to have some cellulite, but by eating a healthy diet and eating slowly can help as this allows the enzymes that break down food to work efficiently enabling proper absorption of nutrients and digestion of the food.

As we get older- the pancreas that produces enzymes to metabolise food starts to diminish, so this can also lead to fat gain. Aging is not the only factor for of the pancreas producing fewer enzymes, our diet can be a cause when high in processed foods and trans fatty acids.

When your liver is healthy it produces bile that breaks down fat. If your body is lacking certain nutrients the bile cannot do its job properly, or if the liver is clogged with toxins, pharmaceuticals and chemicals.

So drinking plenty of fluid and eating a varied diet of good food will give you many of the different nutrients, vitamins and anti oxidants needed to keep the liver working at full potential.

Fruit and vegetables are excellent, and you can always make them into a smoothie if you prefer to 'drink' them rather than eat them.

Beetroot juice is said to help the liver break down stored fats, you can make it fresh with an extractor or buy it from your local health food shop and drink a small glass daily.

Seaweed is rich in minerals, proteins, iodine and vitamins and is said to promote smooth skin and to gets fats moving in the body. Seaweed - Kelp tablets are available in most health stores, and there are many seaweed-based products that are great for the skin.

Skin brushing is claimed to remove toxic waste by stimulating the lymphatic system, directly through the skin. Brush your whole body once a day, I often do this in the shower, start off gently then gradually increase pressure to a firm stroke as you become used to it.

Begin brushing with the soles of your feet, moving up your legs with firm sweeping strokes - I always linger a little longer on the thighs, then brush up the arms, across the shoulders and down your back to the buttocks - another area I linger on, then softly across your tummy and chest with light circular strokes to your neck

I believe massage is the best way of making cellulite look less obvious, it does not go away but the surface becomes less dimply with regular massaging.

There are many products today claiming to reduce cellulite, whether these are effective or not is a matter of opinion, but if they make you feel better about your cellulite then they are worth it.

Skin firming lotions are great for massaging all over your body and especially in areas where cellulite is prone.

Almost twenty years on since having seen my first signs of cellulite, I am really lucky as it has not increased much at all, and my friends and family have noticed this too.

I have never been a great exercise freak, but yoga and walking are my passion and my dog appreciates the walks! This combined with a healthy diet most of the time - like everyone eating a little of what you fancy does not hurt- but continually on a regular base can cause problems- is all I do.

I have not yet bought into buying expensive creams and lotions, but I do body brush a couple of times a week and massage an ordinary body lotion all over every day, I feel this keeps my skin in excellent condition and really helps with circulation by improving blood flow.

It may take a few minutes longer every day doing this, but it has the advantage that you really get to know your body and notice when there are little changes, which us women should all take care of, especially the breast area.

Let us know how you have improved your cellulite.

So remember good food is good health.

Sandra & Ted

Skin Feeling The Burn?

!±8± Skin Feeling The Burn?

It's this time of year that I make my pilgrimage to upstate New York to visit my family. Since I live in sunny Florida I look forward to the beauty of the winter. Waking up, gazing out the window and seeing a powdery layer of fresh snow--radiantly white and soft as a blanket--is one of the greatest pleasures of winter. If it's snowy outside it's a great excuse to spend the day indoors with a book. If you're the active type, it's the perfect opportunity to head for the slopes or grab your snowshoes for a hike.

Unfortunately, we all know that along with the pleasures of winter come the shoveling, the travel delays and the flu bugs that go around every year. As a dermatologist, there's another "winter worry" that I often hear from my patients who spend part of the year traveling to the north. They want to know how to avoid dry skin, the problem that so many of us fall victim to each year.

Why it Happens in Winter

According to T.S. Eliot, April is the cruelest month, but I'm betting he is one of the lucky few who didn't battle with dry skin. Here's how it works: Every winter, along with the drop in temperature, there is a major drop in humidity. Less moisture in the environment makes it more difficult for your skin to hold onto water. Keep in mind that dry skin is caused by a lack of water, not a lack of oil.

Even more damaging than low moisture in the air outside is the air you're pumping into your home to heat it up. This dry heat sucks away any available moisture, wreaking havoc on your skin. That's why both the person who stays cozy at home in winter suffers as much as the person outside hitting the slopes. Dry air is pretty tough to avoid unless you have a second home on a tropical island!

Moisture: How to Hold onto Every Drop

Remember that I said dryness is caused by a lack of water? Well, if you want to avoid dry skin, you have to figure out the best way to hold onto as much water as possible. First off, make it a habit to apply a body lotion after every shower. Have you been doing this, but still have dry skin? The key to sealing in water is applying lotion within three minutes of toweling off. The lotion acts as a barrier between the water in your skin and the air. No water equals dry skin.

Many of my patients say that their hands suffer most in the winter months. You shouldn't give up hand washing, so be sure to keep hand lotion by the sink and apply it after each wash. The skin on the hands is very thin, so it is prone to drying out more quickly. Creams specially formulated for your hands provide extra protection for this sensitive area.

If you want to give your hands a little extra TLC, you can slather on a rich lotion or simple petroleum jelly and wear cotton gloves (available in drug stores) while you sleep to keep the lotion from evaporating. This works for the feet too, along with a pair of socks.

Another way to help your skin while you sleep is to put a humidifier by your bed. Be sure to close the bedroom door so the moisture stays inside. One humidifier can't handle a whole house, especially when your heating unit is pumping, so you may want one in every room where you spend a lot of your time.

What to do for Winter Relief

If you spend an afternoon building snowmen with the kids, and find yourself with itchy, chapped, wind-burned skin, there is something you can do. Use very gentle cleansers for the face and the body, such as Dove or Neutrogena bath bars. The lye in regular soap strips away moisture. On your face and lips, try an ointment like Aquaphor or petroleum jelly. Extremely dry, red patches of skin may require the use of over-the-counter cortisone for a few days. If you have severe dermatitis, you may need to see your doctor for a prescription.

To calm itchy skin all over the body, an oatmeal bath is an excellent natural treatment. Sprinkle 2 cups of colloidal oatmeal (Aveeno is one brand available at drugstores) into a tub of lukewarm water. When you're finished soaking, lightly pat your skin with a towel until it's just damp. This is a great way to help the skin retain more of that soothing water. Follow up right away with body lotion.

If you follow these tips, winter may become a season you look forward to as much as I do!

Microdermabrasion Before and After

!±8± Microdermabrasion Before and After

When you have issues with you skin it can be very difficult. It is very embarrassing because your face is the first thing that most people see when they first meet you. You become self conscious about it and don't feel comfortable going out. It really can affect your life negatively. A lot of people have issues and are getting microdermabrasion on their face, and other body parts. This procedure is very non invasive and works in about an hour. You can even go to work right afterward. The microdermabrasion before and after accounts are well represented online. So many people are getting help for their problem skin- why not you? If you are interested in this and want to know if you can benefit then please read the following and see if it applies to you.

Those with mild acne and mild scarring are using microdermabrasion to clear up their skin and get rid of these imperfections. It works really well and can help people of any age that have acne problems. Believe it or not, microdermabrasion helps remove fine lines and those that are in the beginning stages of aging. It doesn't matter what color your skin is - this procedure can really help you. Light or dark, it does not matter. Fine lines can be eliminated with this treatment. Do not have this procedure if you are sunburned. It will hurt your skin and not be good for it. It also isn't appropriate for those with deep acne scarring. If your skin in sensitive then you may not want to use this treatment. Ask your doctor about alternative treatments.

Do not have too much exposure to the sun before you have this treatment. Do not take any acne medication because it makes your skin too sensitive. You practitioner will give you some instructions that you will need to follow carefully for two weeks prior to your appointment. Ask for some microdermabrasion before and after pictures so you will know what you can expect from the procedure. You cannot wear any contacts during the procedure so make arrangements for that. The clinic that you make your appointment with will give you further instructions when you make an appointment. They will be very specific to what you can and cannot do before your appointment. Make sure that you follow the directions very carefully.

During the treatment your practitioner will put a device or a vacuum next to your skin and it will be like a gentle abrasion using a spray. This is suppose to break up the skins first several layers. Your face will not hurt but it will be red for at least an hour after the treatment. Make sure that you discuss all this with your practitioner if you have any more questions or concerns. If this procedure is not right for you then talk to your doctor about other possible treatments available to you. You can still consider plastic surgery or other treatment for your skin.

Mircrodermabrasion can cost as much as 0 per treatment so make sure you go to a reputable practitioner that is completely certified. You will be very happy with the results if you follow these simple instructions.
